Benefits of exports should be shared with producers
State governments should work in tandem with the centre to ensure that the benefits of exports reach the people at the grassroots.
'There is a need for capacity building of state government officials to enable them to engage in meaningful consultation with the central government to make the foreign trade policy of India address issues at the grassroots,' said R.S. Ratna, professor, Centre for WTO Studies, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.
Indian government has outlined a five-year foreign trade policy aimed to boost exports. The government targets to increase exports to $200 billion this fiscal.
Siddhartha Mitra, director (research), CUTS International, emphasised the need for developing a benefit-sharing mechanism between exporters and producers.
He said a proper benefit-sharing mechanism was essential as majority of the people involved in production were in informal sector.
Mitra was speaking at a workshop organised by CUTS International.
