Heavy snowfall causes travel delays and power outages for New York
Bombay News.Net Saturday 27th February, 2010
Around a million New York City children have been handed an unexpected long-weekend as severe snowfalls brought much of the Big Apple and surrounding areas to a grinding halt just before the weekend.
Up to 50cm of snowfall were predicted for Saturday, and snow ploughs worked through the night Friday in an attempt to keep the city’s major roads clear.
Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, ordered the rare closure of all public schools when it became apparent conditions were such that caution was warranted.
The snowstorm has entirely blanketed the densely populated city causing power failures and transport chaos.
There have been major delays at airports like JFK in New York and Newark in New Jersey, and the National Weather service has announced that an “intense area of low pressure will stay nearly stationary over southern New England and southeastern New York State through early Saturday morning before beginning to weaken.”
