Tourism down but crime up in Hawaii
Bombay News.Net Sunday 3rd January, 2010
The downturn in the Hawaiian tourist industry has meant hardships for islanders.
The number of visitors to the Hawaiian Islands in November fell 17 percent from 2007, while spending by visitors for the first 11 months of 2009 decreased $1.3 billion from the same period in 2008.
Lack of tourists has meant a budget shortfall in many of the states, with teachers having to be sent on holiday over a period of 17 days.
Home foreclosures and bankruptcies have risen, while the unemployment rate has more than doubled since 2007.
It now stands at 7 percent.
More Hawaiians are receiving welfare and crime rates on the island of Oahu have gone up substantially.
