Gujarat continues drive to demolish illegal temples

Bombay News.Net
Wednesday 19th November, 2008 (IANS)

Authorities in this Gujarat capital have launched a drive to demolish unauthorised temples even as critics have lambasted Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the move.

Officials said the drive continued Wednesday despite the overnight protests against the demolition of a Sai Baba temple here.

People threw stones at the police who resorted to baton charge, injuring three protesters.

A 'Mandir Bachao Sangharsh Samiti' had given a call for the Gandhinagar shutdown, which evoked a poor response.

The officials said there are nearly 300 temples built illegally on government lands.

Sunil Oza, a former legislator of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who is now with MahaGujarat Janata Party (MJP), said: 'Modi is a true successor of Mahmud Gazni, Babar and Aurangzeb.'

Over 200 temples have been destroyed in the last three days, Oza told IANS Wednesday.
