Eight more bodies were recovered from the Yamuna Saturday, taking the death toll to 12 in Thursday's accident in which several people were feared drowned while immersing idols of Goddess Durga in the river here, police said.

'Eight bodies were recovered by today (Saturday) afternoon. Two bodies each were recovered from Wazirabad, Gita Colony, Tronica City and one each was recovered from Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur,' a police officer said.

Earlier Friday evening, the bodies of Mandeep, 13, Sandeep, 25, and Ajay Kumar, 22, were recovered from the Yamuna from the Timarpur area.

The body of 22-year-old Jitender was recovered Thursday from Wazirpur area.

'The bodies found today have been handed over to their family members,' the police officer added.

All of them were from Anand Parbat area in west Delhi and had gone for idol immersion on a boat that reportedly capsised due to overloading.

Devotees had turned up in thousands on the banks of the river Thursday. Witnesses said because of the excessive crowd, a minor stampede broke out in the areas in and around Timarpur, Burari and Saraswati Vihar and several people were pushed into the river.
