Bombay News.Net
Friday 4th July, 2008 (IANS)

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) will undertake a research project to study the factors that have led to the formation of wide cracks on the surface of earth in various parts of Uttar Pradesh, an official said Friday.

'The intensive project will study ground water level, water-holding capacity of soil and soil strength of the area. All the geo-physical factors involved directly or indirectly in the formation of fissures on the ground would be studied,' GSI Deputy Director General Deepak Srivastava told IANS.

The upcoming project will start in September after which the report on the same will be sent to the state government, he added.

The project would be undertaken separately in various districts, including Hamirpur, Kanpur, Allahabad, Jhansi, Lucknow and Rae Bareli, where the earth surface has developed deep cracks.

GSI is also planning to set up equipment to monitor micro-earthquakes in the affected areas.
