Maoists attack human rights team in Chhattisgarh

Bombay News.Net
Thursday 12th June, 2008 (IANS)

The police Thursday claimed to have repulsed a Maoist attack on a visiting team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the insurgency hit Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh.

Officials at state police headquarters said their personnel escorting the NHRC probe team fought an hour-long gun battle with armed insurgents in a forest some 500 km south of here. The NHRC team was on its way to Konta area from Dantewada town.

They added that the Maoists escaped.

The human rights team is in Dantewada following a Supreme Court order April 15 asking a NHRC committee to probe alleged human rights violations by the government-backed controversial civil militia movement Salwa Judum.

About 50,000 people have been uprooted from their villages and settled in 23 government-run makeshift camps since the movement began in June 2005.

A NHRC team had visited the district last month to probe human rights violation charges.
