Myanmar leaders hesitant over aid offers

Bombay News.Net
Thursday 22nd May, 2008

Myanmar's military leaders are being pressured to take a back seat at this weekend's meeting of donor countries to help victims of Cyclone Nargis.

The military junta has insisted on hosting the conference which most donors have not yet confirmed.

The UN and ASEAN have warned that contributions might not be forthcoming if the generals are not prepared to make concessions.

They want the heads of the Myanmar junta to spell out what the money will be used for and what measures will be taken to ensure the money is spent as intended.

But Myanmar’s prime minister has tried to convince the UN that it is time to rebuild rather than provide relief.

Aid agencies say many people are still in need of the basics of food, water and shelter.
