Mayawati celebrates a year in office
Bombay News.Net Tuesday 13th May, 2008 (IANS)
As Mayawati Tuesday completed one year as Uttar Pradesh chief minister, activists of her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) painted this state capital blue, the colour of her party's flag, and celebrated the occasion.
There were a number of huge makeshift gates carrying her larger-than-life pictures and eulogising her for the government's performance.
The city was decked up with freshly painted hoardings advertising the government's long list of achievements, while a booklet was prepared for distribution highlighting her initiatives during the year.
A 15-minute film on the BSP's works has been prepared to distribute to television channels. All newspapers carried full-page advertisements acclaiming her achievements.
During the day, the chief minister was slated to inaugurate a photo exhibition at the CMS College auditorium. She would announce new development schemes at a special function to mark the first anniversary and address party leaders and workers before throwing open a host of cultural programmes.
Meanwhile, BSP's principal political rival Samajwadi Party is set to hold demonstrations against the Mayawati regime at the headquarters of all the 70 districts in the state.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would hold demonstrations and address media persons, while the Congress had already issued a 'charge sheet' disputing the state government's claim of improved law and order situation.
